New Delhi: The membership of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been immediately suspended by United World Wrestling (UWW), the sport's worldwide governing body.

As a result, Indian wrestlers will have to compete as "neutral athletes" at the 2018 World Wrestling Championships rather than under the Indian flag. The national anthem won't be played if an Indian athlete wins and stands on the winners' podium.
Due to a lack of elections within the organization, the WFI's membership was suspended. Elections that were scheduled for June 2023 have been delayed.

A number of medal-winning wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a member of parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party, of sexual assault and other types of harassment, engulfing the WFI in scandal during the past year. The wrestlers mounted a months-long demonstration in Delhi before being driven out by the police after alleging that the Union government was shielding the BJP leader.
According to The Indian Express, UWW informed the Indian Olympic Association in writing of its choice. "The IOA has received a communication and will decide the future course of action, including the selection of teams for the World Championships," a representative told the publication.

The UWW threatened to terminate India's membership in June in response to widespread coverage of the wrestlers' protest and the police's mistreatment of and incarceration of wrestlers. It had stated at the time that the WFI had 45 days to organize elections and that failure to do so may result in the suspension of the federation, which would force the competitors to compete under a neutral flag.

The Asian Wrestling Championships 2023, which were originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi, have been moved to Astana, Kazakhstan, according to a UWW announcement made earlier this year, according to The News Minute. This is because of "recent developments in Indian wrestling and a pending inquiry by the Indian sports ministry against the Wrestling Federation of India."

Trials for the World Championship were scheduled on August 25 and 26 in Patiala.
